Maryland received less bids for slot machines than expected. Developers wheeled boxes containing details of six proposals for five potential licenses. It seems that 15,000 machines lawmakers had provided for in a constitutional amendment were too many.

According to Donald Fry, chairman of a state commission running the licensing process, the proposals seek a total of 10.550 machines at first and a total of 13.000 in a second phase.

This did not make everyone happy. While state officials who hoped for new gambling revenue breathed a sigh of relief, an air of disappointment was around the five possible venues which received bids. Until further review Fry declined to mention details about who submitted bids.

Although a stronger turnout from developers was hoped, House Speaker Michael Busch said he considered the bids were “a pretty good start”.
